Football historian Leigh Edwards profiles every Walsall player from 60 post-war League seasons.

DAVID BYRNE: Much-travelled winger who joined Walsall on loan from Partick Thistle in February 1994 and made five appearances for The Saddlers. He later played for St. Mirren, Ayr United and Albion Rovers, then became Director of Football at the College of Further Education in Plymouth.

WILLIE CALLAGHAN: Scottish striker who joined Walsall on loan from Dunfermline Athletic in September 1988 and helped to hammer Birmingham City 5-0 on his debut. He scored once in two second division games, later playing for Montrose, Cowdenbeath, Meadowbank Thistle, Livingston and Partick Thistle.

JIM CAMPBELL: Scottish outside-right who moved to Walsall from Leicester City in October 1946 and contested a first-team slot with Jack Maund. His solitary goal in 14 third division (south) games clinched The Saddlers' 1-1 draw at Reading in May 1947 and he left a year later, settling back in Newton Mearns.

MATT CARBON: Former England Under-21 central defender who joined Walsall from West Brom in July 2001 and scored twice in 55 League games for The Saddlers. Returning to Lincoln City on loan before moving to Barnsley in July 2004, he helped The Tykes win promotion last season. He was released this summer and joined up with the former Walsall contingent currently plying their trade at New Zealand Knights.

TERRY CARLING: Goalkeeper who was ever-present for Walsall in 1965-66 and made 101 League appearances prior to joining Chester in December 1966. He was ever-present as they reached the Welsh Cup Final in 1970 and moved to Macclesfield Town in July 1971, becoming a milkman in Chester.

ALFIE CARTER: Former trainee striker who signed professional for Walsall in April 1999 and made three League appearances before moving to Bromsgrove Rovers in October 2000. He has since played for Halesowen, Newport, Evesham, Stafford, Bath, Halesowen (again), Telford and now TNS (The New Saints) in the Welsh League.

BRIAN CASWELL: Versatile full-back who was Walsall's 'Player of the Year' in 1976-77 and helped The Saddlers to reach the Milk Cup semi-finals in 1983-84, moving to Doncaster Rovers in August 1985. He later played for Leeds United and has since coached at Birmingham City, Northampton and Shrewsbury.

MIKE CECERE: Striker who joined Walsall initially on loan from Huddersfield Town in August 1990 and helped The Saddlers qualify for the third division play-offs in 1992-93. He netted 32 goals in 112 League outings before joining Exeter City in January 1994, then played for Rochdale until injury ended his career.

GRAHAM CHADWICK: Former Manchester City wing-half who joined Walsall in August 1964 and made nine third division appearances for The Saddlers before moving to Chester in July 1965. He later played for New Brighton prior to joining Stafford Rangers, captaining their 1972 FA Trophy final triumph.

PHIL CHAPMAN: Centre-forward who was leading marksman as Walsall reached the FA Cup fourth round in 1948-49, netting 36 goals in 63 third division (south) games whilst at Fellows Park prior to joining Weymouth in July 1951. Injury problems ended his playing career and he became a policeman.

STEVE CHERRY: Ex-England Youth goalkeeper who made 71 League appearances prior to joining Plymouth Argyle in November 1986. He later played for Notts County, Watford, Plymouth (again), Rotherham, Mansfield, Rushden, Stalybridge, Mansfield and is now Notts County's goalkeeping coach.

STEVE CHETTLE: Former Nottingham Forest and England Under-21 central defender who joined Walsall on loan from Barnsley in September 2001 and made six first division appearances. He moved to Grimsby Town in August 2002, later reuniting with Nigel Clough at Burton Albion, then playing for Ilkeston.

GARY CHILDS: Ex-England Youth winger who netted 17 goals in 131 League outings prior to joining Birmingham in July 1987. He reunited with Alan Buckley at Grimsby in July 1989, becoming Wisbech Town's player-boss in June 1996, then played for Boston United, Winterton Rangers and Spalding United. Currently Community Officer at Grimsby Town.

GORDON CHILVERS: Goalkeeper who contested a first-team slot with Reg Davies whilst at Fellows Park and made 123 third division (south) appearances for Walsall prior to joining Weymouth in July 1958. He later played for Trowbridge Town, Yeovil Town and Glastonbury. Now living in Germany.

ATHUMANI CHINE: Tanzanian midfielder who joined Walsall in March 1992 and made his League debut in that month's 2-0 defeat at home to Rotherham United. He also appeared in the next three games against Maidstone United, Halifax Town and Chesterfield, making five League appearances overall.

JOHN CHRISTIE: Goalkeeper who made 102 League appearances prior to joining Burton Albion in August 1962, then played for Rugby Town and Cowes. Now living in Chandlers Ford, he was a sales rep for Columbus Dixon industrial cleaners, then site supervisor at Henry Beaufort School in Winchester.

TREVOR CHRISTIE: Striker who starred in Walsall's 1986-87 FA Cup run and 1987-88 third division play-off Final triumph, netting 22 goals in 99 League games before joining Mansfield Town in March 1989. He later played for Kettering, VS Rugby, Hucknall and Arnold, becoming a salesman based in Chellaston.

STEVE CLARIDGE: Much-travelled striker who became the first-ever outfield player to appear for 15 League clubs. He joined Walsall on loan from Bradford City in March 2006 and his solitary goal in seven League One games clinched the following month's 1-0 victory at Gillingham. Now working in the media.

TOM CLARK: Footballing cricketer who was an Aston Villa reserve inside-left before moving to Walsall in May 1948. He scored twice in nine third division (south) games for The Saddlers. An opening batsman for Surrey CCC, he played 260 matches between 1947 and 1960. He died in his native Luton in June 1981.

ALLAN CLARKE: Brilliant striker who was twice Walsall's leading marksman and netted 41 goals in 72 League games before joining Fulham in March 1966, then starred for Leicester City and Leeds United, gaining 19 England caps. Later Barnsley's player-boss, he also managed Leeds, Scunthorpe and Lincoln.

DEREK CLARKE: The middle one of the five footballing brothers, this striker scored twice in six League games for Walsall before joining Wolves in May 1968. He later played for Oxford United and Orient, becoming a builder in Walsall. He is now an inspector/driver for Laystall Engineering in Wolverhampton.

KELVIN CLARKE: The fourth of the five footballing brothers, he signed professional for Walsall in July 1975 but an ankle injury hampered his progress and he played nine League games in four years before retiring. He became an export clerk for a company in Wolverhampton and now lives in Kidderminster.

WAYNE CLARKE: The youngest of the five footballing brothers, he was top scorer as Walsall qualified for the third division play-offs in 1992-93 and netted 21 goals in 39 League games prior to joining Shrewsbury Town in August 1993. Later Telford United's player-boss, he is now a sales rep for Coca-Cola.

JIMMY COCHRANE: Former Birmingham City inside-right who moved to Walsall as part of the Brian Taylor deal in June 1958. His only goal in six League outings came in the 3-1 win at Millwall three months later and he joined Wellington Town in May 1959, then played for Stourbridge. He lives in Brierley Hill.

DEAN COLEMAN: Goalkeeper who signed professional for Walsall in August 2003 and saved a penalty on his League debut after replacing Joe Murphy in the 2-0 defeat at Blackpool in March 2005. Also playing at home to Bournemouth, he has since played for Halesowen Town and Bromsgrove Rovers and joined Willenhall Town in October 2006.

DON COLOMBO: Outside-left who played for Barking and Portsmouth before moving to Walsall in December 1953. His only goal in 20 third division (south) games came in The Saddlers' 4-2 win at home to Leyton Orient four months later and he joined Cheltenham Town in July 1955, then settled in London.

JIMMY CONDIE: Scottish winger who helped Walsall finish third in the third division (south) in 1947-48, then reach the FA Cup fourth round in 1948-49. He scored twice in 49 League games for The Saddlers before joining Worcester City in July 1950, then played for Hednesford Town. He died in Scotland in 1999.

MARTIN CONNEALLY: Goalkeeper who signed professional for Walsall in February 1980 and made his League debut in the 2-1 defeat at Rotherham United seven months later, also playing in the next two games against Carlisle and Charlton. He moved to Brereton Social in July 1981 and has since settled in Rugeley.
