MATCH REPORTS 2010/11
LINCOLN CITY v WALSALL (LEAGUE CUP) - 19/10/2010
THE SADDLERS' second-string have enjoyed a totesport.com League Cup victory over Lincoln City at Sincil Bank.
Walsall started the game with real purpose and forced a smart save from veteran 'keeper, Paul Musselwhite within the opening five minutes.
After surviving a couple of penalty appeals, The Saddlers had David Bevan to thank for a good save from Sam Turner as he tipped the ball over the crossbar.
With 28 minutes on the clock, Walsall took the lead when Jamie Paterson crossed for Alex Nicholls to find the net from close range.
George Bowerman then went close as half-time approached, whilst at the other end, Nathan Adams' inviting ball into the danger zone was scrambled clear.
The second period started in a similar fashion as the first half as Will Grigg fired just over. However, within five minutes Grigg had doubled our advantage when he found space inside the area to fire home beyond the despairing dive of Musselwhite.
Lincoln were able to reduce the arrears when Joe Anderson's free-kick found its way through a crowd of players and into the net.
Our two-goal advantage was soon restored, though, when Grigg turned provider as his pull-back from the left was gobbled up by Paterson who turned sharply before finding the corner of the net.
With time running out, Turner hit the crossbar for The Imps, whilst Musselwhite had to be alert to save well from Bowerman's drive.
Substitute Jake Jones was denied by an alert Musselwhite as Walsall ended the game on top and it came as no surprise when Paterson made it 4-1 as he broke through before slotting home with much aplomb.
There was still time for youth-teamer, Joey Butlin to have a goal ruled out as The Saddlers completed a comprehensive victory.
"I felt that we controlled the game generally but lacked a killer instinct in the first half," said reserve team boss, Martin O'Connor. "We deservedly went in at the break one goal to the good and during the interval we spoke about getting a grip on the game, which we did during the second period.
"We went on to score three good goals and whilst I was disappointed with the goal we conceded, we ran out worthy winners in the end.
"The lads' desire and enthusiasm were the main positives to take out of the game."
WALSALL: Bevan, Westlake, Hickman, McDonald, Lancashire, Geddes, Marshall, Paterson, Grigg (Butlin), Bowerman, Nicholls (Jones). Subs: Hayes, J. Cresswell.
WALSALL 7 ROTHERHAM UNITED 0 (LEAGUE CUP) - 10/11/2010
THE SADDLERS' second-string breezed to a convincing 7-0 victory over Rotherham United in the totesport.com League Cup.
Martin O'Connor's side were on top throughout and deservedly took the lead on ten minutes when Alex Nicholls coolly slotted home.
The advantage was doubled five minutes later as first-year professional, George Bowerman finished a neat move.
With trialist, Andy Butler figuring in the heart of defence alongside Alex Hickman, our dominance was rewarded with a third goal on 24 minutes as another slick passage of play ended with Will Grigg getting his name on the scoresheet.
The fourth goal arrived six minutes from the interval when Bowerman notched his second of the afternoon.
The Saddlers continued where we had left off after the restart and within ten minutes Nicholls made it 5-0 from the penalty spot after he had been felled inside the area.
Five minutes later it was six as an excellent ball from skipper, Sean Geddes cut Rotherham open and presented Nicholls with a hat-trick.
The scoring was complete on 68 minutes when the lively Aaron Forde marked a hard-working display with a sweet strike that gave the visiting 'keeper no chance.
"We played very well," said reserve team boss, Martin O'Connor at the end. "I was delighted with the attitude of our players as we kept up a good tempo throughout the game.
"It was nice to score seven, but, to be honest, it could and should have been more. That said, it was a pleasing team performance with some of the youth team lads stepping up and giving a good account of themselves.
"I thought that Malvind Benning and Ben George did well in the full-back berths and Aaron Forde worked hard in midfield.
"The clean sheet was vital and it was a real confidence-booster for us."
WALSALL: Bevan (Brain), George, Benning, Hickman, Butler (Hayes), Geddes, Nicholls, Forde, Bowerman, Grigg (Butlin), Paterson. Subs not used: Jones, J. Cresswell, Deards.
TIPTON TOWN 2 WALSALL 1 (BIRMINGHAM SENIOR CUP) - 17/11/2010
A YOUTHFUL Saddlers' side went down to a 2-1 defeat at a blustery Tipton Town in the first round of the Birmingham Senior Cup.
"Apart from our final ball, I felt that our youngsters did okay," said reserve team manager, Martin O'Connor. "We had the majority of the play and kept the ball well, but lacked a killer instinct when it mattered.
"We put plenty of crosses into the box and had our fair share of shots, but failed to penetrate what was a good Tipton side.
"There were positive signs, though. I felt that both of our full-backs acquitted themselves well and stuck to their task, whilst Tom Hayes and Connor Deards performed particularly well.
"It was a good work-out for us and a good opportunity for us to look at our emerging youngsters."
Youth teamer, Joey Butlin notched The Saddlers' goal in the final minute.
WALSALL; Bevan, George, Benning, Hayes, Hickman, Geddes, S. Jones, Forde, Bowerman, Deards, Paterson. Subs: Butlin, J. Cresswell, Mellors-Blair, J. Jones, Wren.
WALSALL 0 DERBY COUNTY 2 (LEAGUE CUP) - 9/2/2011
A GOAL in each half condemned The Saddlers' second-string to a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Derby County in the totesport.com Reserve League Cup.
Despite the defeat, Walsall have already qualified for the next stage of the competition as we found ourselves up against a Rams side featuring a number of players with first-team experience.
"It was a good test for us," said Jon Whitney, who was overseeing his first reserve game. "The lads generally did well; it was my first game in charge and all I asked was that they gave me 100%, which they did.
"I felt that we maybe sat a little too deep at times and were a little loose up front, but our effort and work-rate can't be faulted.
"Derby's extra bit of quality showed in the end, though, but it was a good run-out for us in a game which had a high intensity.
"There is certainly plenty for us to build on here as we look to keep the first-team lads match fit and help the youth teamers step up to this level of football."
Manny Smith played for just under an hour alongside Clayton McDonald in the heart of the back-line. "It's always good to get a run out, especially against strong opposition," he added. "I feel sharp and ready. You never know when you're going to be needed, so it's important that I am ready to take my chance and at the forefront of the gaffer's mind.
"Everyone wants to be involved and play their part, but it's a team game and we all have a role to play whether we are in the starting line-up or not."
WALSALL: Bevan (Brain ), Forde, Benning, McDonald, Smith (Hayes), Geddes, Marshall, Mellors-Blair, Jones (J. Cresswell), Paterson, Bowerman. Subs: Butlin, Deards.
WALSALL 5 SCUNTHORPE UNITED 1 (LEAGUE CUP) - 29/3/2011
THE SADDLERS' reserves breezed into the Final of the totesport.com League Cup following an excellent 5-1 victory over Scunthorpe United at Banks's Stadium.
The visitors, who field eight players with first-team experience, took an early lead through Matt Godden but we soon got into our stride and Richard Taundry levelled matters with a superb free-kick from out wide that flew past former Saddler, Joe Murphy on 19 minutes.
We had our noses in front five minutes as George Bowerman turned home Alex Nicholls' inviting ball into the danger zone.
It was 3-1 shortly before half-time as Bowerman bravely headed home his second goal of the afternoon.
The second period started with Walsall on top and Jamie Paterson added a fourth goal on 55 minutes before the scoring was complete ten minutes from time as Paterson's strike deflected in off Bowerman to give the first-year professional a hat-trick and deservedly send Walsall into the Final where either Sunderland or Preston Nort End await.
"We worked hard and showed desire, determination and passion," said second-string boss, Jon Whitney. "We wanted it more than them and these are the sort of qualities that we are trying to achieve throughout the club from the youth team right up to first-team level.
"I said to the lads before the game that we had to be ready for the battle and treat it with the intensity that we would a first-team game, and we certainly did that.
"Our attitude was spot-on and the lads gave me everything. They enjoyed it out there and did me proud.
"There were excellent performances throughout the team and now we look forward to the Final."
WALSALL: Bevan,Taundry, Jones, McDonald, Lancashire, Marshall, J. Cresswell, Paterson (Mellors-Blair), Nicholls, Grigg (Butlin), Bowerman (Deards). Subs not used: Hayes, Wren.
