THE SADDLERS' youth team ran out 3-1 winners at Cheltenham Town in our latest pre-season friendly.

"It was a good, competitive game," said Head of Youth, Dean Smith. "It was exactly the sort of game we needed at this stage, with the new season just a week away.

"There were chances at either end before Cheltenham took the lead, but we soon recovered and got back on level terms when Connor Deards headed home Joey Butlin's cross.

"The first half was pretty even with both sides giving a good account of themselves, however, after the break our superior fitness and technical ability shone through and we dominated for long periods.

"Our ball retention was good and we deservedly took the lead when Jason Wellings' run ended with him firing home.The third goal soon arrived as Jamie Tank lobbed home.

"It was a pleasing performance from all."

The Saddlers' youngsters take on Sporting Khalsa on Wednesday evening at Noose Lane, Willenhall.
