WALSALL Football Club can confirm that, subject to passing a medical, Troy Deeney will today join Watford in a deal worth £500,000 plus an additional £150,000 should the Hornets achieve Premier League status.

The striker, who handed in an official transfer request via his agent earlier this week, has been the subject of a number of bids from the Championship outfit.

After Watford increased their offer on five occasions, the two clubs reached a mutually agreeable figure late last night.

Funds generated from Deeney's expected move will be available to Chris Hutchings for squad strengthening. "Watford's interest in Troy has been no secret," explained Hutchings. "They made a number of bids for him, none of which were deemed acceptable until they came in with an improved offer late last night.

"Through his agent, Troy had made his position quite clear by handing in a transfer request. However, we were not prepared to let the player leave unless the deal was the right one for the club, which is why we rejected all of Watford's previous bids.

"A fee has now been agreed, which we are satisfied with, and, after ensuring we prepare properly for tomorrow's opening game of the season, my attention will turn to bringing in a replacement for the outgoing player.

"With the speculation regarding Troy, we have been busy indentifying targets, which we will now pursue further."

Deeney arrived at Banks's Stadium from non-League outfit, Chelmsley Town, in 2006 and made 132 appearances, scoring 27 goals.
