MANNY Smith has taken the positives out of Tuesday night's pre-season friendly with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Saddlers may have suffered defeat at the hands of their Premier League neighbours but, for Smith, these type of games are all about match fitness and allowing for Chris Hutchings' new team to gel.

"It was a good work out," he said. "Of course you want to win every game you play but these type of matches are about more than that. Like the gaffer said, you don't get any point out of these matches.

"I thought Wolves were class. They're a Premier League team, so it's good to put yourself up against that type of player.

"We got some minutes on the pitch and it's part of the overall pre-season programme. Wolves were a week or so in front of us in their preparation.

"We've got Coventry on Saturday and that'll be another good test."
