DARREN Byfield today paid tribute you his striker partner Troy Deeney, who was crowned The Saddlers' Player of the Season at Sunday's End of Season Awards Dinner and finished the season as the club's top goalscorer.

Byfield and Deeney forged an effect partnership up front for The Saddlers, plundering 24 goals between them.

"I was made up for Troy," explained the 32 year-old hitman. "He's been superb. Even when the team weren't at our best, or when we weren't creating many chances, Troy's effort and work rate was phenomenal.

"He did well to get 14 goals and it will give him something to build on next season. As a striker too, I wanted to finish top scorer but you have to take your hat off to Troy. I ended up with 10 (goals), so at least I was in double figures.

"He's a good guy and I enjoy playing with him.

"I think as the season went on you could see our partnership getting stronger and stronger. Hopefully, it will be even better next season."
