NICHOLLS TAKES HIS CHANCE

Posted on: Mon 08 Mar 2010

ALEX Nicholls netted his fourth goal of the season on Saturday to give The Saddlers the lead against Millwall.

The 22 year-old finished well after being played through by a defence-splitting pass from strike partner, Troy Deeney and further joy was to follow as Richard Taundry's first goal at Banks's Stadium doubled our advantage.

But a defensive mistake saw The Lions handed a lifeline and, after Matt Richards was sent off for two bookable offences, they proceeded to snatch an equaliser with virtually the last kick of the game. "We were well in control at 2-0," said Nicholls. "They didn't pose too much of a threat until the mistake that led to their opening goal.

"Obviously we were disappointed to concede so late; it was a great strike, but we should have finished the game off and that is something that we have got to work on."

Nicholls was chosen to start the game up front alongside Deeney, with former Millwall man, Darren Byfield having to settle for a place on the bench. "I feel that I have a lot to offer up front," he added. "I know that I have got to take my chance and score goals in order to be given a run in the team, so it was nice to get on the scoresheet at the weekend."
