DETECTIVES investigating Birmingham city centre clashes have issued CCTV images of the men they want to identify.

Officers at West Midlands Police's Major Incident Unit have scoured hours of footage from cameras at the scenes of trouble to draft a list of suspects.

The investigation, was launched after sporadic outbreaks of disorder marred the two protests.

Police quickly contained the trouble but a number of men were arrested at the time, while others were caught on camera after breaking away from the main protest groups to cause trouble.

They are wanted for offences including violent disorder, serious assault and criminal damage around the New Street area during the protests on August 8 and September 5 2009.

Detective Inspector Buck Rogers, heading the enquiry, said:

"I would urge anyone who recognises the people in these images to contact us straight away with the information that will allow us to take positive action to prevent this type of behaviour from happening again."

"I would also send a clear message to those people who recognise themselves in these pictures - we will find out who you are so hand yourselves in now."

The trouble happened as two groups, the English Defence League and United Against Facism, staged separate protests.
