SAM PARKIN opened his Saddlers' goalscoring account with a coolly taken last-minute penalty to salvage a point in a 2-2 draw with Southend United on Saturday. "I was delighted to get off the mark," he said. "It was a case of putting my foot through the ball and making sure it hit the back of the net as quickly as possible.

"It was a disappointing second half, to be fair. We looked comfortable until the sending off changed the complexion of the game and in the end we were delighted to get a point.

"We could have folded and gone on to lose, but if anything we got hold of the ball more towards the end and finished the stronger of the two sides.

"It wasn't a pretty game, but it's early days yet and I'm sure we'll go on to have a good season.

"Leeds will present us with another tough test on Tuesday. We'll be ready and well prepared for the game as we look to extend our unbeaten League start."
