NEW SIGNING, Mark Hughes can't wait to get his Saddlers' career underway.

The former Northampton Town skipper became Chris Hutchings' first summer signing when he put pen to paper at the Banks's Stadium earlier this week. "I'm pleased that everything is sorted and now I just want to get my head down and work hard," he said. "This is a club that is known for bringing players through and developing them. I know both Anthony Gerrard and Daniel Fox and they have both benefitted from being here.

"The set-up here has really surprised me. The training ground and facilities are first-class and there is a real homely feel about the place. Everyone has made me feel welcome and that is exactly what you need when you arrive at a new club.

"Northampton offered me a new deal and there were other clubs interested in me, but the challenge here appealed to me. I am a passionate and honest player who always gives 100%. I want to play at the highest level possible and know that League One is going to be a stern test this year, but I am looking forward to it."

Hughes will replace fellow former Everton Academy graduate, Anthony Gerrard in the heart of the back-line.

Meanwhile manager, Chris Hutchings is continuing to work hard behind the scenes to strengthen the squad ahead of our opening pre-season friendly at Rotherham United on Saturday, July 18th.
