POSITIVES FOR GERRARD

Posted on: Mon 06 Oct 2008

ANTHONY Gerrard believes there were plenty of positives to take from Saturday's goalless draw with Hereford United.

The Edgar Street stalemate extended The Saddlers' unbeaten run to four games and the reliable defender admitted that, on the balance of play, a draw was a fair result.

"It's a little bit of a blip on our recent form but its another clean sheet and a point so it's a decent result." he said. "The league position says nothing for how they played and I can't see them staying down the bottom if they play like that week in, week out.

"We had to work hard for the clean sheet but we defended well as a unit. We've remained unbeaten and that's the main thing. All things considered, a draw was about right."

The Saddlers now turn their attention to cup football as they prepare for tomorrow's Johnstone's Paint Trophy encounter with Cheltenham Town.

It is a tie Gerrard is looking forward to especially as victory would represent a step closer to a Wembley appearance.

"Cheltenham will be a tough game," he added. "Martin Allen will have them all fired up and they'll be up and at us as all of his teams are.

"It's another tough away game but one we're looking forward to. Barring something magical in the FA Cup it's our best chance of getting to Wembley this year.

"We can't look too far ahead in the competition though, we've just got to treat it as another game. Everyone looks forward to a cup game; it gives you the chance to take your mind off the league."
