Project Underdog

On a separate note, we have been approached by The Football League to bring to our attention a charity called Project Underdog, which was set up to help areas that were affected by the riots in the summer. Project Underdog has already received high profile backing from David Beckham, Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks.

A group of unsigned music artists from areas affected by the riots are releasing a version of Linkin Park's "Iridescent" to raise money, not only for Project Underdog but also for The Football League Trust.

The Trust will receive 25% of all profits from the single which is available on general release and download from 27th November through InScreen Records and Universal. Some of the money raised will help fund community work at Football League clubs so please give it your backing. The single is now available for purchase/download and I'll be promoting it at forthcoming matches so have a listen out for it!

OCTOBER 2011

IT'S ALL change again as the run-out music has another makeover!

The changes I made to the run-out music at the start of the season didn't really prove to be a huge success. It was trialled over the first six home matches but never really took off, so now, when the players take to the pitch, I've gone for something a bit more upbeat immediately after the fanfare, namely Flo Rida - Club Can't Handle Me ft. David Guetta.

I hope you like it and it gets you into the mood to make some noise and get behind the lads!

Thank you to everyone who contacted me with feedback, I appreciate hearing what fans views are, so keep your views coming!

Recent half-time tunes at home matches have been:

AUGUST 2011

You may have noticed a slight change to the music when the players have entered the pitch at the start of recent matches.

Immediately after the fanfare we've introduced some tunes to encourage supporters to sing along - She Wore A Yellow Ribbon; a snippet from Cab Calloway's Minnie the Moocher; and Madness' One Step Beyond. These are always popular songs for The Saddlers fans to sing along to, particularly at away matches, so let's make some noise here at The Banks's for the kick off!

I'm indebted to Gavin Drake, our pitch-side announcer, for his help in producing the mix. It's still a 'work in progress' as we're experimenting with the timings, however we're hopefull we'll have the finished article for the next home game. Let's make some noise Saddlers fans!

The Hook

Isn't it funny how you can wake up in the morning with the radio playing an incredibly irritating song and no matter how hard you try, you end up singing it in your head (and sometimes out loud) all day long?

That's when you're on the hook and it's got you!

Fortunately it works with songs we like, which is usually why we like them! Whether it's a strong lyric, an intricate guitar riff, a quirky sliding bass (as per Mick Karn of Japan fame who, sadly, passed away on 4th January aged 52), or any of a whole raft of different things, we play them over and over because we're 'on the hook' and love the tune, and often aren't even sure why.

There's been some, what I'd call, great 'pop' music (as opposed to a specific genre) about recently, stuff that's definitely had me on the hook, many tunes of which have been played here at the Stadium. Full listing of tunes played at recent games follows below…

v Notts County 1.01.11

+ Japan - Life In Tokyo

+ Elbow - Neat Little Rows

+ The Naked & Famous - Punching In A Dream

+ Biffy Clyro - Bubbles

At Full Time it was The Lines - El Matador (Instrumental), followed by Fenech Soler - Demons

v Bristol Rovers 29.01.11

+ Fenech Soler - Demons

+ The Vaccines - Post Break Up sex

+ Martin Solveig - Hello

December 2010

Every now and again a song seems to grab you that you just can't stop listening to. That was the case with a recent tune I had from Tom Roberts at Shootmusic by Steve Mason - Boys Outside (Andrew Weatherall Dub 1). It was the second tune played at half-time in the match against Carlisle, I love a bit of reggae dub, but it's not had any mainstream air play, which is a shame as the big radio stations always seem to play 'safe' and avoid the fringe genres.

Anyway, recent tunes at half-time have been….

v Swindon Town 18.09.10

+ Barbara Streisand - Duck Sauce

+ Let The Sunshine - Labrinth

+ God & Satan - Biffy Clyro

At the end was Northern Man - Detriot Social Club.

+ Shame - Robbie Williams

At the end was Northern Man - Detriot Social Club

+ Please Don't Go - Olly Murs

+ Did I? - Diagram of The Heart

At the end was She Wore A Yellow Ribbon - Mitch Miller and Northern Man - Detriot Social Club.

May 2010

AS THE domestic season winds down we're already starting to turn our attentions towards the World Cup and wondering how far the England team is going to get in this years finals in South Africa. Under the control of Fabio Capello, England has had a magnificent qualifying campaign and it's no secret that the England Coach doesn't want any distractions during the build up to the finals and banned the team from producing a World Cup song. That, however, hasn't stopped several 'artists' (term used loosely in some cases!) from producing World Cup songs in various guises.

Terry Venables, Commentators United (featuring 11 football commentators from television), Chico, Hannah and The Eternal Celebration (Doug O'Brien) are amongst some of the contributions and (time permitting) will get a play at our last home match against MK Dons.

Earlier this year I had another enquiry about one of the songs played at the end of some of the matches this season - Elbows 'One Day Like This'. A while ago someone wanted information on it so they could have the first dance to it at their wedding, and this enquiry was the same. Belated best wishes and good luck for the future go to Andy Creeden and Jane Harrison for their wedding which took place on 20 March 2010.

The Millwall match on 6 March was our Help For Heroes day so we had a military band providing the half time entertainment, and what a splendid job they did too! At the end of the match was She Wore A Yellow Ribbon by the Mitch Miller Chorus followed by Always And Echoes from White Belt Yellow Tag. Other recent tunes heard at half time have been -

v Colchester United 20.03.10

+ Poker Face - Lady Gaga

+ I Predict A Riot - Kaiser Cheifs

+ Stylo - Gorillaz

+ Hitsville UK - The Clash

At the end was She Wore A Yellow Ribbon - Mitch Miller Chorus followed by Welcome To The Monkey House - Animal Magnet.

v Wycombe Wanderers 05.04.10

+ She Said - Plan B

+ Stop For A Minute - Keane

At the end was She Wore A Yellow Ribbon - Mitch Miller Chorus.

v Tranmere Rovers 10.04.10

+ Saturday - Ocean Colour Scene

+ I Need You Tonight - Prof. Green ft Ed Drewett

At the end was She Wore A Yellow Ribbon - Mitch Miller Chorus and I Believe In You by Hannah.

v Hartlepool United 24.04.10

+ I Want You - Paul Harris vs Eurythmics

+ Not Myself Tonight - Christina Aquilera

At the end was She Wore Yellow Ribbon - Mitch Miller Chorus followed by I Believe In You - Hannah.

January 2010

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year!

Wasn't it superb to see local lad Noddy Holder, former lead singer with Slade, here for the Leyton Orient match (19 December 2009)? Great to see a local legend gracing our turf!!

It's been a strange few weeks hasn't it? Since the Leyton Orient mach, loads of matches have been called off, we've had the worst spell of winter weather for 30 years and lot's of disruption just generally trying to get about. It seems a long time since such a succession of matches have suffered through the weather. Hopefully things will return to something we'd call 'normal' for this time of the year soon, and we can start to watch some games again!

From a musical point of view I've had to adjust my playlist a little bit, I had Christmas tunes lined up for the original Norwich match so I think I'll be changing them! Chris Whiting's song which is to support the Help For Heroes campaign, 'My Boy' will be played at half time during the re-arranged Charlton Athletic match though, as planned.

Recent arrivals that will be released over the coming weeks that may get played during the coming matches have included -

+ Placebo - Bright Lights

A great tune from a band with a great unique sound, this track is released on 8.01.10 and is from the album Battle For The sun.

+ Detriot Social Club - Black And White

This is a taster from the forthcoming album that will be released in the Spring.

+ Editors - You Don't Know Me (6 versions including - original radio edit, Caged baby remix, Tom Middleton remix, Rob Da Bank remix, Tom Middleton Dub and Rob Da Bank Dub*) *my preferred one!

The radio edit is released on 25.01.10 and is from the album In This Light. I'm not sure of what the point of so many remixes is though!

+ The Brookhouse Boys - Cold Crazy Eyes

This was released back in December and is a taster of the album to be released in March.

+ Matthew P - On Top

From the Swimming EP this is available from 25.01.10.

+ The Courteeners - Cross My Heart And Hope To Fly

Released on 7 December 2009, this is available as a free download from the bands web site - www.thecourteeners.com

+ Sade - Soldier Of Love

To be released on 8th Feb this is from the first album from Sade since the 2000 platinum release of the album, Lovers Rock.

Songs heard during the last two home games have been -

v Southampton 5.12.09

London Blackmarket - The Hardest Stone

Delphic - Doubt

End of match, Cold Play - Everythings Not Lost

v Leyton Orient 19.12.09

Maria Carey - All I Want For Christmas

Slade - Merry Christmas Everybody

WALSALL band, Paradoxic will be playing at The Wharf Bar in Walsall Town Centre on Friday, October 16th.

July 2009

It's that exciting time of the year as we all get ready for, and look forward to, the new season ahead.

On a personal note, as well as taking care of the music, I'm looking forward to carrying out my new role as Matchday Host, something I'm really excited about . If you see me escorting players in the Saddlers Club, Bonser Suite or Stadium Suite before Saturday matches, come over and have a chat!

This seasons new run-out tune has been finalised with a few subtle changes from last seasons, which I hope you all will like. I'm indebted to Gavin Drake, our pitch-side announcer, for helping me put it all together and completing the mix. Thanks Gavin!

Back in June I had an interesting email from a supporter enquiring about a song that was used at the end of our matches last season. The song in question was 'One Day Like This' by Elbow. It turned out that the fan was, in actual fact, a Middlesborough supporter living in Bristol. He'd done an internet search for info on the song as he wanted to use it for the first dance at his wedding! The search brought him to the Matchday Music page on this website so he emailed me. I was happy to provide the information required. Belated congratulations therefore go to - Matthew Ellis and Katie Toovey who tied the knot on 6th June. I hope you had a lovely day!

For the forthcoming season the Matchday Music will again be supplied by HMV Walsall, and the half time music will again be supplied by Shootmusic.com. My thanks go to Darryl and Steve at HMV and Tom Roberts at Shootmusic. New tunes have arrived throughout the summer for review and continue to do so at a steady rate.

New arrivals have included:

The Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition Sweet Disposition (Cagedbaby Remix) An excellent tune from the album 'Conditions' out the 10th August this tune is released on 3rd August. It's unclear whether the remix will be released.

Lethal Bizzle - Going Out Tonight Not for me this one and unlikely to be played. This is released on 23rd September.

Duckworth Lewis Method - Meeting and Mr Miandad - Test Match Special This reminds me of The Strawbs from the 70's. Both of these tunes, as is the rest of the album they're from, are about Cricket. No release information available.

The Prodigy - Take Me To The Hospital Take Me To The Hospital (Adam F and Hor remix) Unmistakeale Prodigy, this is the third release from the album 'Invaers Must Die'. The single is released on August 31st.

Kasabian - Where Did All The Love Go? Out on 3rd August this neat number follows their No.3 single, 'Fire'.

See you all soon Mike Day music@walsallfc.co.uk

April

CONGRATULATIONS to Daniel O'Connor who correctly answered the question in the Brighton & Hove Albion programme - 'What is the connection between our management team and Coldplay'. The answer is of course, Chris (Hutchings) and Martin (O'Connor). The lead singer of Coldplay is Chris Martin. Well done Daniel, you win the selection of CDs!

April and May are historically good months of the year for bands to release new material and this year is no exception. Re-mixes, new material from old favourites along with up and coming bands are amongst the following tunes to listen out for during the three remaining home games -

Manic Street Preachers - Jackie Collins Existential Question Time

This is a featured album track from their ninth album, 'Journal For Plaque Lovers'

AC/DC - Anything Goes/Big Jack

Two tunes from the Aussie based 'Rock Gods' from the platinum selling album 'Black Ice', which so far has sold 6 million copies worldwide.

The Temper Trap - Science Of Fear (4 re-mixes)

Four re-mixes of the radio edit released on 20th April.

+ Boe Weaver re-mix (my favourite)

+ Filthy Duke re-mix

+ Herve re-mix

+ Mistabishi re-mix

Flightstar - Mercury Summer

The second single from the new album 'Be Human', this was released last Monday 6th April. The Album is released on 22nd April.

Flightstar - Mercury Summer (Instrumental)

As above but without singing!! A great piece of music.

Officer Kicks - Tom Thumb

A neat, bluesy track available as a download at the end of May, this is from the bands second album 'Citywide Cufew' available in the summer.

The Enemy - No Time For Fears (3 re-mixes)

Three re-mixes of the radio edit version released on 27th April

+ Haunts re-mix

+ Filthy Dukes re-mix

+ Ocelot re-mix (my favourite)

White Belt Yellow Tag - Rhys April Fools Mix

From the 'You're Not Invincible' EP released last Monday 6th April.

The Maccabees - Love You Better (Instrumental)

An instrumental album version of the radio edit.

Gary Go - Open Arms

I really rate this guy, and this tune doesn't disappoint. Open Arms, from the forthcoming album 'Gary Go' (released on 27th May) is an excellent follow up to Wonderful. The single is released on May 11th.

The Prodigy - Warrior Dance

Unmistakeable 'Old Skool' Prodigy, this is from the 5th album 'Invaders Must Die' which went straight into the album charts at No.1!

Calvin Harris - I'm Not Alone

Following the success of No.1 hit 'Dance With Me', this is Radio 1 DJ, Zane Lowe's current record of the week.

Depeche Mode - Wrong and Wrong (Instumental)

The radio edit was released last Monday 6th April, the first single from the new album 'Sounds Of The Universe'. A great tune of which I think the instrumental version is better.

March 2009

NINE MORE new tunes to get our teeth into over the next few matches, and I think there's some real quality about at the moment:

U2 - Manificent

Another class piece from the veterans, this comes from the UK No1 album, No Lines On The Horizon. The release will be sometime in April, though the exact date hasn't been published yet.

Morrissey - Something Is Squeezing My Skull

The title suggests one of his more moody numbers but the tune is quite lively really. A vibrant song with a great hook, it's to be released sometime in April, from the album Years Of Refusal.

1990's - 59

From the album kicks, this superb track is released on 30th April. It's all about a 59 bus that travels from Narnia via Brigadoon to Polloksheilds…in the wrong direction! Go and figure that lot out then!

The Temper Trap - Science Of Fear

From Melbourne, this is the debut single in the UK for the Australia band. The single is released on 20th April to be followed by the album, In The Summer.

Noisettes - Don't Upset The Rhythm

Getting quite a lot of airplay on the radio, this catchy throwback to 70's is from the Album Wild At Heart. No release info available.

The Enemy - No Time For Fears (Instumental)

A great complement to the vocal version, this is from the new album to be released on April 27th.

Detriot Social Club - Sunshine People

Released on the 30th March this is the second single to come from the Newcastle based, 6 piece band.

Two from The Maccabees - No Kind Words & Love You Better

No Kind Words is out now and is also available free by visiting their page - www.myspace.com/themaccabees. It will be followed by Love You Better on 27th April.

August 2008

HOW DO you fancy yourselves as a music critic then? Want a chance to tell bands that their new single is great/awful?

Well here's your chance to have your say on what you think are potentially good new releases or potentially bad ones…… and, just for having your say, you will have the chance to win some fabulous prizes.

Prizes will vary but will include matchday tickets, gig tickets, band t-shirts, CD's and much more, so what have you got to lose?

We're getting a steady supply of pre-release music from Shootmusic.co.uk, a nice mix of new bands such as Pint Shot Riot and well established bands such as Oasis and Travis.

The deal is they pass feedback on to the record companies and in some cases directly to the bands, your views on the new songs. Couldn't be easier. You tell me 'would you buy it?', 'why you love/hate it?' and I tell Shootmusic.

A week or so before the next home match I'll put a playlist up, then all you have to do is have a listen at half-time (in between Dave Bathurst and Gavin Drake's interruptions!). It doesn't even matter if you've already heard them on the radio.

Just send me an email to music@walsallfc.co.uk. Put your name on the email and a few words about what you thought of the tunes then at the end of the month I'll sort a draw for the prizes.

I should also mention we've got an excellent deal with HMV who provide us with loads of music, so if you like the tunes you hear, get down to HMV, Unit 10a, Crown Wharf Retail Park, Walsall, WS2 8LL and buy them!
