THE SADDLERS have gone out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy on penalties at the hands of Bury.

Walsall were seeing plenty of the early ball and a poor clearance from Wayne Brown in the visitors' goal on three minutes required Efe Sodje to tidy up as Darren Byfield lurked with intent.

In the next attack, Darryl Westlake's cross found Darren Byfield who teed up Dwayne Mattis only for the former Bury man to fire over.

With ten minutes on the clock, new-boy, Clayton McDonald made his presence felt at a corner to set up Richard Taudnry whose effort was deflected wide by his own player.

At the other end, Manny Smith blocked well from Jordan Robertson's stinging strike before former Saddler, Andy Bishop headed well wide as a Walsall attack broke down and The Shakers were able to break down the right.

A Saddlers' corner found McDonald whose powerful drive was deflected wide and the resulting flag-kick caused more panic amongst the visitors' defence who eventually cleared their lines ahead of Troy Deeney.

Peter Till had a low drive that crept wide of the target, whilst Byfield's attempts to unlock the Bury defence with his pace were thwarted as he looked to play in Deeney with a low ball across the area.

An inviting cross from Darryl Westlake found Byfield in the 34th minute and as he held off the attentions of Sodje, he was unable to get in a strike and the chance was lost.

With the interval approaching, The Shakers started to get a grip on the game as firstly Robertson turned well to make room for an effort that flew wide, then Bishop hit a shot on the turn that was just off target.

The last action of the half saw Rene Gilmartin get across his goal well to push away Brian Barry-Murphy's free-kick.

The second period started with Smith defending well once more to deny Bishop.

Steve Jones replaced Jamie Vincent before a cross from the right by Till was headed over at the far post by Deeney, whilst at the other end, Robertson poked in an effort that Gilmartin gathered.

On 69 minutes, Steohen Dawson had a shot from distance that was saved by Gilmartin. Then Simon Johnson got in a strike that took a wicked deflection off Smith but Gilmartin made a smart save.

Taudry was well off target with his strike from distance before Browb had to be alert to clear outside his area with Byfield bearing down on him.

A burst from Byfield ended with him firing into the side-netting before Till was replaced by Sam Parkin as the clock ticked down.

As The Saddlers looked for a late winner, Byfield put an effort wide and it was to be his last involvement in the action as he gingerly left the field to be replaced by Alex Nicholls.

The game ended goalless soon afterwards and went straight into penalty kicks.

Sam Parkin stepped up to take the first and his effort struck the base of the post with Brown well beaten. Brian Barry-Murphy converted Bury's first to put them in the driving seat.

Richard Taundry opened Walsall's account before Richie Baker fired home Bury's second.

Troy Deeney then stepped up to tuck the ball away, but Andy Bishop made no mistake for Bury.

Next up it was Steve Jones who fired home as Ryan Lowe did the same for the visitors.

The fifth and final spot-kick saw Matt Richards convert with confidence only for Stephen Dawson to keep a cool head and send The Shakers through 5-4.
