THE SADDLERS took a deserved point from League leaders Tranmere Rovers in a goalless draw at Prenton Park.

There was a scare on three minutes when Tremarco's long throw-in was missed by Clayton Ince, however, Anthony Gerrard was on hand to clear in front of goal from Gareth Taylor.

A curling effort from Calvin Zola on the quarter-hour mark flew just over as the home side, who had not lost a League game since the opening day of the season, looked to stamp their authority on the proceedings.

The on-loan Dwayne Mattis fell awkwardly and had to receive lengthy treatment shortly afterwards before eventually being stretchered from the field. He was replaced by youngster, Troy Deeney.

Walsall threatened when Daniel Fox pumped a free-kick into the area as Rovers cleared for a corner which was headed away.

Both sides were cancelling each other out as the half wore on with Richard Money's men attempting to pass the ball around at every opportunity whilst the home side looked to utilise the height and power of Zola and Taylor in attack.

Another dangerous Fox free-kick had to be headed out from in front of goal before the half ended with a booking for Mark Bradley for a reckless challenge near the touch-line.

The second period began with Zola powering towards goal before dragging a low effort just wide of the far post.

With 51 minutes on the clock, a high free-kick into the danger zone was pulled back by Bradley into the path of Scott Dann who was up from the back, but his shot was blocked in front of goal by Chorley.

David McDermott replaced Edrissa Sonko just before the hour and McDermott was straight into the action when he found Bradley whose instinctive shot rebounded into the path of Ishmel Demontagnac who was crowded out inside the area.

At the other end, The Saddlers failed to properly clear their lines and as the ball was played in from the right to former Walsall loanee, Chris Shuker, he missed the target from a good position.

Shuker was then denied in the next attack by a good save from Ince as the home side searched for a break-through.

On 69 minutes Fox's long ball forward was struck goalwards by Deeney only for the experienced John Achterberg to parry the shot into the path of Tommy Mooney but he couldn't convert the rebound from close range.

The ever-willing Mooney then saw a powerful drive deflected over as The Saddlers continued to show plenty of endeavour and work-rate to prove more than a match for the high-flying Rovers.

There was a scare on 87 minutes when Sherriff got his head on the end of a free-kick from a dangerous position only for Ince to save well on his line.

The 'keeper then denied substitute, Antony Kay in the closing stages as the game ended with honours even to leave the travelling faithful, who had been in good voice all through the game, happy to see our unbeaten run extended.
