THE SADDLERS came home from Kenilworth Road with three excellent points following a 1-0 victory over Luton Town.
A corner from Lee Holmes within the opening two minutes saw the ball fall out to Anthony Gerrard whose shot was cleared off the line. Then Kevin Betsy beat his man before firing wide of the mark as Walsall began with real purpose.
It wasn't long before the opening goal arrived when Tommy Mooney played in new-boy, Stefan Moore who beat the offside trap before coolly slotting past home 'keeper, Dean Brill for a goal after just four minutes of his debut.
There was some good defensive play by Darren Wrack who was in the right position to head off the line from Chris Perry as a home corner caused problems for Clayton Ince and his back-line.
A weak effort from Drew Talbot was easy for Ince as The Hatters looked to get into their stride and just past the half-hour mark, there was a real let-off for Richard Money's men as a ball in from the right found Stephen O'Leary in space just in front of goal. His effort was tame and Ince was able to make the save without too many problems.
The Saddlers were forced into a change on 34 minutes when Edrissa Sonko was replaced by Michael Dobson.
Right on the stroke of half-time, Ian Roper found Betsy who delivered an inviting cross from the right which was headed out at the far post, just ahead of the lurking Tommy Mooney. The resulting corner-kick ended with Moore's effort blocked in front of goal as the half-time whistle sounded.
There was some good early battling by inspirational skipper Mooney which heralded the start of the second period.
On 61 minutes Moore was replaced by Troy Deeney, just before Matthew Spring fired over for the hosts as he made space for a shot from distance.
A foul on the ever-reliable Rhys Weston gave Lee Holmes a free-kick from near the touch-line which found its way to Mooney via the head of Deeney but his effort went wide.
On what was a bright and windy March afternoon, Mooney tried a cheeky lob from just outside the area which landed on the roof of the net as Brill scrambled across his goal.
Youngster, Richard Taundry took the place of Betsy as the home side posed a number of questions only to find The Saddlers' defence in disciplined and stubborn mood.
An intelligent ball from Wrack split open The Hatters' defence to set Mooney away but his low shot landed just the wrong side of the post. Then Holmes cut inside in the next attack to get in a strike that was parried by Brill with the loose ball cleared to safety.
With time running out, Ince was forced to tip over a long-range attempt and from the resulting corner the home side had the ball in the net only for their celebrations to be brought to an abrupt end as the referee gave a foul on Ince.
There were no further worries for Walsall as we held on to claim another fine away day success.
