Ahead of the event, saddlers.co.uk caught up with former British lightweight champion Martin Gethin, who helped set up Wild Star ABC, to find out more…

Q: So first of all Martin, tell us a bit more about your own career in boxing for those who don’t know.
MG: The very first belt I won was the British Masters. I went on to win the Midlands Area title and fought in Las Vegas before coming back to win the English title. I went on a bad run and had to have an operation on my side but I trained hard, came back and won the English title again, before winning the IBF and then the British title. I then picked up another injury with my right ear drum, which kept bursting, but the ratings came out the other day and I’m still ranked number eight out of 114 in the world.

Q: So how did you become involved with Wild Star? And how much are you looking forward to next month’s event at the Banks’s?
MG: I helped set up Wild Star boxing gym. We’ve been going for about five or six years and we’re slowly growing and building a good team together. We’re looking forward to coming to the Banks’s; it’ll be our first show at Walsall FC and only our second-ever amateur show. Our first show was in Rushall and was a total sell out. It was a good show, we were really happy with it and everyone really enjoyed it. So when Dan Mole (Walsall’s Club Secretary) asked us to do a show at the Banks’s, we jumped at the chance. We’re really looking forward to it.

Q: What are the order of events?
MG: There are going to be at least eight fights on the show and we’ve got about ten boxers. We’ve got trophies too; one of the trophies has a glove on the top and a few little stars underneath. It’ll be competitive and we’ve got a bout of the night at the end, featuring the two best boxers, who’ll each have a trophy as well. There are some good kids coming through and I see real potential in them. They’re only 12/13 but they’ll put on a good show.
