WELBORN ENJOYS WORLD CLASS SPARRING AHEAD OF LATEST OUTING

4 May 2016

Two-time British challenger stepping up preparations...

JASON Welborn has been enjoying world-class sparring as he prepares for his second fight inside a month.

The two-time British title challenger stopped Czech Michal Voskya last month and has recently been added to Black Country Boxing and Hatton Promotions’ co-promotion ‘Mayhem’ at Walsall Football Club next weekend.

As he steps up his camp, Welborn has been helping David Avanesyan prepare for his WBA Interim World Welterweight Title clash with ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley.

The big hitting Russian takes on Mosley, a three-weight world champion, in Arizona at the end of May and Welborn pitted his wits against the current Interim Champion during a lively 8 round spar.

“It was a great experience,” Welborn said after sparring 8 rounds with Avaneysan. “He’s operating at a level I’m setting my sights at and is a very good, strong boxer. I was really impressed with him; he can really bang.

“That said, I thought I held my own and it’s given me confidence that I can mix it at this level now I’m back at welterweight.

“David doesn’t waste a shot and I had to be on it for the entire 8 rounds. It was a bit of a war and that’s good for us both. He’s going in with Shane Mosley who has done it all in the ring. It will be a great fight. His trainer, Carl Greaves, asked me to pop up and I’m grateful for the opportunity.

“I needed some ring time after stopping Voskya early, so it was a good workout for us both.”

The Rowley Regis fighter takes on William Warburton next weekend as he looks to secure big fights later in the year. He is joined by stable-mate and former British Lightweight Champion, Martin Gethin, on the May-Hem card.

Also on the card are Ricky Hatton trained duo (Wednesbury welterweight) Sam Evans and (Nantwich heavyweight) Nathan Gorman. They appear alongside unbeaten prospects Kieron McLaren (Stoke super lightweight) and Chad ‘2 Slick’ Sugden (Newark super middleweight).

Tickets are £30 for standard unreserved seats and £60 for VIP tickets which includes table service and a two-course meal. Call the Walsall FC Ticket Office on 01922 651 414 to book.
