Ahead of next week’s show, saddlers.co.uk spoke to The Soundations' drummer Mark Powell to find out more…

Q: So Mark, tell us a bit more about The Soundations.
MP: There’s been a Soundations for a few years. It started out as a duo with little instrumentation – more vocals and a guitar. Then it extended to a three piece a few years ago and more recently it became a four-piece band with more live instrumentation, so the band has grown over a period of time. We do a variety of shows – an 80s tribute, a 60s tribute, a Soul and Motown show, as well as a party band set.

Q: What is your background in music? And who are the other band members?
MP: We’ve all been involved in music, in some shape or form, throughout our lives. We have Ray on guitar, Col on vocals, Ral on the saxophone/keyboard and I play the drums. I’ve always loved 70s punk and I played in a number of punk and rock bands when I was younger. I then started working in a more commercial environment and toured around Europe before joining the Soundations a few years ago.

Q: What should we expect from Friday’s show?
MP: There’ll be an hour of Soul and Motown with music from various different artists. It’s not a tribute to any one artist, more to a genre. And then we’ll be back for half an hour of party music, doing a mixture of things – 70s, 80s and a couple of recent tunes.

Q: You’ve done a number of shows at Walsall FC, how much are you looking forward to returning to the Banks’s Stadium?
MP: We love performing at Walsall. It’s a great venue and, as Black Country guys, it’s on our doorstep. Both rooms we play in are fantastic, with good stages, and our shows are usually very well attended. Over the last couple of years we’ve built up a little following. People know they get a good night when they see the Soundations, and with the lights, stage and accompanying disco, it’s a great night out.
