Dean Smith was 'disappointed' Walsall could only draw 1-1 against Sheffield United after dominating long periods of a thriller encounter.Smith’s men bossed the opening period, with Paul Downing and Milan Lalkovic each rattling the woodwork and Blades keeper George Long producing several fine saves.
The Saddlers made a deserved breakthrough six minutes after the interval when Tom Bradshaw converted Romaine Sawyers’ superb low cross.
But Sheffield United ended the match strongly and equalised through Jose Baxter’s 20-yard strike - leaving Smith frustrated afterwards.
“I’m disappointed we didn’t get all three points,” admitted the Saddlers boss.
“I don’t think it would have been an injustice had we gone it at half-time three goals up. Our performance in the first half was excellent and we made a good team look average.
“When we play like that, you can’t tell whether teams are good teams or not.
“We moved the ball well, had great movement, hit the woodwork a couple of times and their keeper has made some really good saves.
“When we got our noses in front in the second half, I thought we were going to go on and win the game.
“They probably had their best spell after we scored but we were disappointed to only get a point.”
Smith was left aggrieved with United’s equalising goal after a free-kick was controversially awarded against Romaine Sawyers in the build-up.
“It wasn’t a free-kick,” insisted Smith.
“I’ve seen it again and that is why I am even more aggrieved. Romaine has put in challenge and the lad has just gone down.
“And from that free-kick Connor Sammon has slipped in the box and fallen into James O’Connor.
“That should have been given as a free-kick as well because he (the referee) gave enough soft ones to them.”
The Saddlers are back in action against Swindon at the County Ground tomorrow evening (kick-off 7.45pm).
