SAWYERS GETS A-HEAD

Rare headed goal for Romaine...

A RARE headed goal from Romaine Sawyers saw The Saddlers progress in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on Wednesday evening as we overcome the challenge of Sheffield United.

It was a deserved victory for Dean Smith’s side as we blunted The Blades to take our place in Saturday morning’s Northern Area semi-final draw.

“We were the better side overall and created some decent chances throughout the game,” said Sawyers. “We could have won by three or four in the end but Sheffield United are a good side and you always have to be on your guard against them.

“To get the winner was the icing on the cake; some are saying that it went in off a defender, but I’m claiming the goal for sure.

“I don’t get many with my head and even if it did take a slight deflection along the way, it was going in anyway.

“It means that we are just three games away from a place at Wembley, but we know that we have to put that on the back-burner for the time being.

“Our main focus now has to be picking up three points against Peterborough on Saturday and extending our unbeaten run.

“They are a good side who were in the play-offs last season and are sure to be up there again this time around.

“We always fancy our chances at home and seem to do better against the top sides in this League, so hopefully we can get the win and put in the kind of performance that we did when they came here last season.”

It was 12 months ago when The Posh last came here and in front of the live Sky Sports cameras we put in a superb display with Sawyers on the scoresheet in a 2-0 triumph.

“We were fantastic that night and it would be nice to put in a similar performance on Saturday,” added Sawyers. “There is certainly plenty of belief amongst the lads and winning matches breeds confidence.

“There is a lot of healthy competition and that means that we are working that extra bit harder and doing that bit more to keep our place in the side as we know that there is a lot of talent waiting to step in.”
