ATTACKING midfielder, Romaine Sawyers, has hailed the Saddlers’ new-found character following the Club’s unbeaten start to the 2015/16 season.A thrilling 2-1 victory over neighbours Coventry on Saturday lifted Walsall up to second in League One, and extended our winning streak to four matches in all competitions.
Speaking after the Sky Blues success, Sawyers identified greater mental strength and improved character as key factors behind our impressive recent form.
“We showed once again that we’ve got a new character to our team,” said the 23-year-old. “Last year, when we conceded, we appeared to panic a bit and there was a chance that we would concede again. This time, we’re getting on with it and showing a real togetherness and strength coming into the back end of games.
“Everyone is together. I’m not saying we didn’t have that last year but everyone has a mutual agenda: everyone wants to go in the same direction. Everyone knows what we want, and everyone believes in what we want, and we’re showing it.”
Goals either side of half-time from Anthony Forde and Tom Bradshaw put the Saddlers in control, before Jacob Murphy’s stunner gave Coventry a lifeline.
“Sometimes you’ve got to put your hands up and say it was a world class goal,” admitted Sawyers. “No keeper in the world would have got near it, so we can’t dwell on that situation.
“But the performance was strong. Going forward we were strong, and defensively we looked good. At times they put us under pressure but we stuck together and saw it through.
“In training, we work a lot on reactions, and the reaction to that goal was perfect. We got back on top of the game and, as much as they were putting pressure on us, we were still playing the Walsall way and looking to get back up the pitch.
“Tayls hit the post and Kieron (Morris) put one wide so we even created chances after that where we could have made it three or four. It’s positive signs that we’re scoring goals and creating chances.
“Last season, we didn’t create or score as many goals as we would have liked, but this season we’re firing on all cylinders.”
Walsall are back in action against Championship high-flyers Brighton in the Capital One Cup second round tomorrow evening.
