ROBERTS JOINS RUGBY TOWN ON LOAN

Young keeper joins Evo-Stik Northern Premier side...

Walsall goalkeeper Liam Roberts has joined Evo-Stik Northern Premier side Rugby Town on a month’s loan deal.

The 20-year-old stopper was an unused substitute in the Saddlers’ 2-0 victory over Burton last weekend after being recalled from a loan spell with Gresley.

And now the youth team graduate, who signed a one-year contract extension in the summer, has been loaned out to gain more first-team experience.

“It’s a good opportunity for me to go out and develop as a player,” said Roberts.

“I’m still learning and the experience at Gresley was fantastic. I really enjoyed my time there and I’m hoping to take some of that experience to Rugby.

"We played them in the Birmingham Senior Cup and they’re a strong side so I’m looking forward to doing my best for them.

"Nothing beats playing first-team football. You train all week but matchday is what you look forward to.”

Roberts has yet to make an appearance for the Saddlers’ senior side, although he has played first-team football in non-league.

He impressed on loan at Evo-Stik sides Rainsworth Milners Welfare and Gresley last season – and joined the latter again at the start of this campaign, making 11 appearances.

The Moatmen thanked Roberts for his contribution, saying: “Gresley FC would like to thank Liam for the professional way he has conducted himself both on and off the pitch.

“We wish him all the very best for the future and hope to see him playing regularly in the Football League or higher in the near future.

"The club would also like to thank Walsall FC for their help and co-operation for Liam's loan last season and this.”

Roberts will be hoping to make his Rugby debut against Stafford Rangers tomorrow afternoon.
