Saddlers' boss scoops League One Manager of the Month...

THE SADDLERS’ excellent recent form has been recognised with Dean Smith claiming the League One Manager of the Month award for January 2013.

Smith beat off competition from Yeovil Town’s Gary Johnson and Paulo Di Canio of Swindon Town to claim the prize – the first time that a Walsall manager has won such an accolade since November 2006.

“Naturally I am delighted to win this award,” said Smith, who guided The Saddlers to four wins in our five games during the month. “It is very much a team effort with players, staff and supporters all playing their part.

“Everyone involved can take credit in this but I would particularly like to thank Richard O’Kelly, Jon Whitney and my family for the help and support that they have given to me.”

Saddlers’ skipper, Andy Butler has added his praise. “It’s a fully deserved accolade,” he said without hesitation. “He has been fantastic, even when the results weren’t going our way, he stuck to his beliefs and now we are getting our rewards.

“The Gaffer has assembled an exciting young side and really put his stamp on the team.”
