HARD-EARNED WIN

Young Saddlers' side battle out win at Halesowen Town...

THE SADDLERS came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory at Halesowen Town on Wednesday evening.

Fielding a youthful side that included Craig Westcarr, former loanee, Romaine Sawyers and several trialists, it was the home side who started on the front-foot with young trialist goalkeeper, Shane Lewis, called into action early on.

Our first attempt at goal came when a free-kick from James McQuilkin landed just wide of the target before youth teamer, Jordan Garner, headed wide from a Westcarr corner.

There were chances at either end as firstly Alex Reid fired wide for Neil Woods’ side and then Neil MacKenzie tried his luck from distance for our hosts.

A neat move started by Westcarr saw him link up well with Sawyers who in turn fed Joel Purkiss but he was denied by a clearance on the line from Aaron Griffiths.

The home side made numerous changes at the break and went ahead ten minutes into the second period when former Walsall youth teamer, Jason Wellings, finished a slick move with a low strike beyond Lewis.

The lead lasted barely two minutes as trialist, Jordan Ball, fired home from Sawyers’ pull-back.

As the game started to open up, both sides had chances to go in front, but it was The Saddlers who went ahead when Wes Rush fired home at the second attempt after being set-up by Ball.

The Yeltz hit the post late on, but The Saddlers held out to claim a hard-earned victory.

WALSALL: Lewis, Ashmore, Christopherou (Probert 73), Purkiss (Kinsella 70), Garner, Dallison (c), Westcarr (Bennett 57), McQuilkin, Ball, Sawyers (Bennett 57), Reid (Bakayoko 73).

We will have reaction to the game from Neil Woods later today...
