BENNING BUZZING TO BE BACK IN

22 April 2014

Emerging full-back happy to return to the starting line-up...

MAL BENNING returned to The Saddlers' starting line-up for the first time since early March on Bank Holiday Monday as we shared the spoils with Gillingham.

Whilst the local lad was delighted to be back in the team in place of Andy Taylor, he was disappointed that we couldn't turn our possession into goals to claim the three points.

"We should have won the game," he said without hesitation. "We lacked a cutting edge during the first half and whilst things improved after the break, we couldn't get that all-important second goal to kill the game off.

"Hopefully I've done enough to keep my place for the next game but I felt that the overall team performance was good. It was just frustrating that we couldn't see the game out and get a win.

"We deserve to finish in the top ten this season. We've been in there throughout and hopefully we can win these final two games and end on a high.

"It's about staying professional and doing the right things to ensure that we end the season in the right way."

Benning has started 13 League games this season and also weighed in with his first goal for the club in our 2-1 defeat at Coventry.

"It's been an up-and-down season for me personally, but I have learned a lot," he added. "It's good to see the younger players getting their chance here and we have some real talent at the club, which I am pleased to be part of.

"Hopefully we will be able to push on as a team next season and continue to make progress."
