CENTRAL defender, Paul Downing, bounced back from a tough evening at Rochdale with a solid display at Gillingham to help us secure a hard-earned point and clean sheet.
“We owed it to ourselves after Tuesday to bounce back in the right way,” he said. “I felt that, to a man, we put in a shift and got our rewards with a clean sheet.
“It was a game of few chances, to be fair; we know that they are a good side who have started the season well, particularly at home, but we are pleased with the point and hopefully will push on from here.
“It’s about maintaining these standards and finding a level of consistency. We've kept four clean sheets already this season, so that is encouraging for us.
“Saturday’s game was about getting back to basics and doing what we are good at. I know that I was poor in the last game, but I feel that I have showed a strong mental character.
“We’ve got two home games in succession coming up now and hopefully we can continue where we left off against Preston and get some wins on the board.”
