DEMETRIOU: 'OUR BEST RESULT OF THE SEASON'

30 December 2015

Full-back scored in Peterborough win...

Right-back Jason Demetriou believes Walsall’s 2-0 victory over promotion-rivals Peterborough was “our best result of the season”.

Late goals from Demetriou and George Evans secured the Saddlers’ fifth consecutive league win.

The result ensured we stayed top of League One – ahead of second-placed Burton on goal difference – heading into 2016.

“I thought we deserved the win,” said Demetriou.

“Peterborough are a good, well-organised side and a different team to the one we played in September.

“It was such a hard game, being our second in three days.

“It wasn’t our best performance but it was probably our best result of the season so far.”

Demetriou opened the scoring on 81 minutes, when his right-footed drive deflected in off Miles Addison.

“I get forward enough so I should be getting more goals and assists,” admitted Demetriou, who also scored Walsall’s winner against Gillingham in October.

“The more goals I can contribute to the team the better.

“I saw Fordey pick up the ball and I knew he was going to drive at the defender. I didn’t expect him to pass because Fordey loves a shot, but it was a great assist.

“I decided to hit it towards goal and it got a little deflection and it went in.

“I can’t take the goal against Chesterfield – but I’ll take that one!”

The Saddlers have now gone six-and-a-half hours without conceding a goal – and Demetriou insists our impressive defensive record is a team effort.

“We defend from the front and all the boys put in a good shift,” Demetriou added.

“No one is lazy in this team and the two centre halves have been fantastic this year.

“It helps that we haven’t had to make too many changes – I know in the last few games we have, but most of the time at least four or five of the boys at the back are the same.

“We all know each other’s game as well, which is good.”

Walsall will be hoping to record a sixth straight league win when Rochdale visit the Banks’s in our first match of 2016.

Goals from Andy Taylor and Sam Mantom gave the Saddlers a hard-fought 2-1 victory in the reverse fixture in August.

And Demetriou is expecting another tough game against Keith Hill's Dale.

“They’re a strong, physical side,” he said.

“I remember they seemed to get stronger as the game went on when we last played them.

“We also played well and as long as we play our game, we’re confident we can get the result again.”
