GOOD UNDERSTANDING

25 November 2013

Downing puts a case for the defence...

PAUL Downing played his part in a third successive clean sheet as The Saddlers came home from Crawley Town with a point from a goalless draw.

“We knew that it would be a tough game,” he admitted. “They are a good side and, to be fair, it wasn’t the best of pitches.

“We were able to stick together as a team and built upon the last couple of performances.

“The defence has a good understanding; we felt comfortable out there and we know that as long as we keep clean sheets, we’ll get something out of games.

“It’s about keeping this going and taking it into the next game on Tuesday.

“I felt that we created some decent chances in the second half, but it just didn’t fall for us. We’re not too down about it, though, and we’ll be ready to go again at Sheffield United.”

Downing spoke about the Chambers twins who took the decision to play just two days after the death of their father.

“Everyone at the club is right behind them,” he said. “It was a great effort and credit to them for making the decision to play.

“It shows the spirit and commitment that exists here. They are great lads and excellent professionals.”

Thoughts now turn to the trip to Sheffield United on Tuesday.

“We go there with nothing to fear,” he continued. “They had a a good win at the weekend, so there is sure to be a big crowd there expecting them to beat us.

“We will be looking to keep things tight and frustrate them and hopefully come home with the points.

“It’ll be a hard game, but one that we’re ready for. We like playing away and feel that we can give anyone a game.”
