WHITNEY: SADDLERS READY FOR FLEETWOOD TEST

9 December 2016

Walsall visiting the Fylde Coast tomorrow...

Jon Whitney says his Saddlers team are ready for the test that Fleetwood will pose.

Walsall travel to Highbury Stadium tomorrow to take on a Cod Army side that have won their last four home league games, scoring nine goals in the process.

Town sit eighth in League One, outside the play-offs only on goal difference – although they are just three points ahead of the Saddlers.

Whitney’s charges won 1-0 at Sheffield United last time out, and the boss says his team are feeling positive ahead of another tricky away game.

“There has been a lift around the place following the result against Sheff Utd,” said Whitney. “The players’ intensity has gone up another 10% so it’s been a good week for us.

“Fleetwood are not quite as expansive as they were; they don’t play from the back as much, but they do play some open football.

“They have got some really good players with Cole and Ball up front and Pond at the back who plays central.

“They are a good team and will be a test, but we will be ready for them.”

The Cod Army are now managed by ex-Brentford, Wigan and Leeds boss Uwe Rosler – someone Whitney faced during his playing days.

“I played against him when I was at Lincoln against Manchester City,” Whitney added. “I marked him. He had long hair then.

“It was at the old Maine Road and we beat them 1-0. It was a massive upset.

“I have come across him from staff side and he is a very driven and enthusiastic manager. He wears his heart on his sleeve, and I can see how he is trying to play at Fleetwood.

“He is trying to do things the right way, and it will be a good football match, a tactical game and I’m looking forward to locking horns with him again.”
