WHITNEY EXPECTING INTRIGUING AFFAIR

21 October 2016

Boss looks ahead to Swindon trip...

Saddlers Boss, Jon Whitney, will be looking to his forward thinking players to make the difference in what he believes will be an ‘intriguing’ game against Swindon Town on Saturday.

“It’ll be mouth-watering to see who can unlock whose defence first”, said Whitney. “They’re coming in to the game off the back of a really good 3-0 win against an in-form Rochdale.

“Luke’s [Williams] got them playing the right way and has a clear philosophy in how he wants his side to play.

“It’s a really intriguing game for me and it’s one which I’m hoping we can go there and keep our run going.

“My players are starting to get more and more confident, and they’re realising what we’re doing is starting to working.

“If they keep doing that, then I’m sure we’ll come away with a positive result.”

With four goals already this season, Whitney will be hoping Kieron Morris, who recently signed a new deal with the club, can get his name on the score sheet again and add to his tally for the season.

“I can see Kieron getting double figures”, he added. “His target this season is to work for the team, retain the ball and create opportunities.

“But he’s also going to get on the score sheet many times this year, simply because of the work he does.

“He’s arriving at the back post and getting himself in the box a lot more and you could see that from his goal against Shrewsbury.

“You can call it opportunist but we work on it a lot in training.

“He’s a role model for players who have to go out on loan and then return to kick on and show their potential.“

Confidence remains high in the camp after battling back to gain a point at Gillingham during the week and Whitney is looking to reproduce aspects of our performance on Saturday.

“It was a good point,” Whitney explained. “We put them under a lot of pressure.

“Performance levels were really good, especially after our goal and they’re the levels I’m looking for us to start games with.

“The lads are starting to understand what we’re asking of them, and they’re enjoying their football.”
