WALSALL'S PADDOCK VOWS TO EMULATE GETHIN AND BRING BELT HOME

21 July 2016

Local boxer back in action this Sunday...

WALSALL's Luke Paddock vowed to bring the English title home when he visited his hometown football club on Tuesday evening.

The Bloxwich-born boxer takes on Anthony Upton for the English Super Lightweight Title in Cannock on Sunday and wants to be the first Walsall fighter since Martin Gethin in 2010 to bring an English strap to the area.

The 24 year-old watched Walsall draw 1-1 with Birmingham City before being introduced to the crowd at half-time.

“I’m ready to go now,” he said. “It is fight week and I’m feeling good. It was nice to pop down to Walsall for the game. It’s my club and I draw a lot of inspiration from Martin Gethin who, like me, is a Saddler.

“He won an English title back in 2010 and that’s what I plan to do on Sunday.

“Anthony is a very good fighter and someone who is similar to me. We both like to box, we’ve both only lost once, we’re both young and hungry; it has all the ingredients for being a good fight.

“I want to bring that belt back to Bloxwich and do the town of Walsall proud.”

The weigh-in for Sunday's English Super Lightweight Title clash between Anthony Upton, trained by Ricky Hatton, and Paddock in Cannock takes place at the Grosvenor Casino Walsall, Bentley Mill Way, Walsall, WS2 0LE at 1.00pm on Saturday.

Sunday’s Hatton Promotions and Black Country Boxing co-promotion is entitled ‘Danger Zone’ and takes place at the Chase Leisure Centre in Cannock, Staffordshire.

In addition to Upton vs. Paddock, fellow Ricky Hatton-trained prospects Sam Evans, Sonny Upton and Reuben Arrowsmith are in action on the undercard.

Also featured are Burton’s Leon Gower, Derby debutant Sahib Singh Mann, and former world kickboxing champion Chad Sugden.

Tickets, priced at £30 and £60 Ringside, are available by calling 01543 504 065.

The show takes place on Sunday afternoon with doors opening at 12.30pm.
