WALSALL SIGN THEO VASSELL

8 July 2016

Young defender pens one-year deal...

Walsall FC are delighted to announce the signing of promising young centre-back Theo Vassell on a one-year deal, with a further year's option.

The 19-year-old, who worked with first-team coach Dean Holden at Oldham last season, was offered a contract after impressing on trial.

He becomes manager Jon Whitney’s seventh signing of the summer.

“I’m delighted to have signed for Walsall,” said Vassell, who came through the youth ranks at Stoke.

“I think this is going to be a really good opportunity for me and hopefully I can get some game time.

“I know Deano [Dean Holden] from Oldham and he played a big part in me coming here. He really convinced me and I think this could be one of the best decisions I’ve made.

“They’re a good bunch of lads here. We’ve got a lot of young players and a few who are more experienced. I feel I’ve settled in well and they’re all really friendly people.”

Manager Jon Whitney added: “Deano spoke really highly of Theo from his time at Oldham.

"He came in at the end of last year and trained with the first team and I was really pleased with his application and defensive attributes.

“He’s quite old school. He just wanted to defend first and foremost, and then work on the technical side.

“He’s one for the future. He may push through and be one we put out on loan to get some games under his belt.

“But again, we’re a developing club and he’s one who will hopefully be a centre half for Walsall in the coming years.”
