ST THOMAS MORE REPORTER: WALSALL 2-0 PETERBOROUGH

20 February 2017

Mandip Virk's match report...

Saturday’s match where Walsall went head to head with Peterborough United concluded in a 2-0 win for Walsall.

The game was full of frustration and hard work as both sides tried to get a goal to give them the lead. A lot of brilliant saves were made by Peterborough’s keeper which kept Walsall from scoring.

As it came to half time, both teams were still giving all to get a lead but it remained 0-0 at the interval.

Deep into injury time, Walsall attacked with power and scored 2 goals from Erhun Oztumer and Kieron Morris to secure victory for the Saddlers.

Oztumer’s opener brought confusion as a foul was appealed from the Peterborough side but Walsall kept playing and scored from a brilliant corner in the 92nd minute. Jon Whitney, manager of Walsall, repeatedly confirmed the first controversial goal was not a foul.

Peterborough attacked with a lot of force trying to get the equalising goal whilst Walsall held on tight to their winning goal. Further frustration among the visitors saw Peterborough captain Chris Forester get sent off. This gave Walsall more power as they still held on to their one goal lead but they carried on attacking and grabbed a second in the 97th minute.

The second goal was scored by Morris who ran at the Peterborough defence, making a tackle to win the ball and taking a brilliant left foot shot to squeeze it through the keeper.

The game concluded in a triumph for Walsall which they hope to continue throughout the season.
