SADDLERS SIGN SCOTT LAIRD ON LOAN

31 August 2016

Left-back joins on loan from Scunthorpe...

Walsall FC are delighted to announce the signing of experienced left-back Scott Laird on loan from Scunthorpe until at least 10th January 2017.

The 28-year-old, who has also played in League One for Preston and Stevenage, becomes the Saddlers’ 15th signing of the summer transfer window.

“I’m really pleased to be here,” said Laird. “When it came up, I snapped the gaffer’s hand off and it was something I wanted to get done quite sharpish.

“I’m an attacking full-back and I love to get forward. I love keeping clean sheets but I do like to get forward, get the ball in the box and try to get a few goals myself.

“Every club I’ve been at I’ve scored goals and I want to continue that here.

“Walsall have always played an attractive style and that was definitely something that encouraged me to come here.

“I’m a loud voice on and off the pitch and hopefully my experience can help the younger lads progress.

“I’m really looking forward to working with the gaffer and I want to help Walsall get as high as they can.”

Born in Taunton, Laird began his football career with Plymouth and enjoyed loan spells at Tiverton and Torquay before moving to Stevenage in January 2008.

He spent four-and-a-half years at Broadhall Way, making over 200 appearances, and helped them win back-to-back promotions from the Conference Premier to League One.

Laird signed for Preston in May 2012 and was a key member of the North End squad that won promotion from League One via the play-offs in 2014/15.

He joined Scunthorpe that summer and played 38 times for the Iron as they finished seventh last season, missing out on the play-offs on goal difference.
