Walsall will be looking to put Tuesday’s EFL Cup disappointment behind them and make it two wins from two in League One. The Saddlers excelled on the road last season, winning 13 of their 23 away games – more than any other League One side – and losing only four, although one of those came at Oldham. The Latics, now managed by ex-Northern Ireland assistant boss Stephen Robinson, lost 3-0 to Millwall in their season opener, but responded with a 2-1 cup win over Wigan in midweek.

Walsall crashed out of the EFL Cup at the first-round stage after losing to League Two Yeovil in extra time. A 103rd-minute Amadou Bakayoko own goal and a 70-yard Matt Dolan wonder strike earned the Glovers victory.

9th August – Oldham 2-1 Wigan – EFL Cup First Round
Josh Law scored a late winner as Oldham knocked ten-man Wigan out of the EFL Cup. Ryan Flynn’s low finish put the hosts ahead after 18 minutes before Will Grigg volleyed the visitors level. The Championship side were reduced to ten men when Jake Buxton was shown red for a late tackle, and Oldham then sealed victory as Law poked home with seven minutes remaining.

9th April 2016 – Oldham 1-0 Walsall - League One
Walsall suffered back-to-back league defeats for the first time in over a year after losing at relegation-troubled Oldham. The only goal came on 63 minutes, when Doncaster loanee Curtis Main slotted neatly into the corner from Jonathan Forte’s pull-back. Jordy Hiwula missed two good chances for the Saddlers either side of half-time, while Sam Mantom and Andy Taylor also went close.
The former Motherwell and Northern Ireland assistant manager was appointed Oldham boss in July following the departure of John Sheridan to Notts County. The 41-year-old, who worked with Northern Ireland at Euro 2016, played as a midfielder for Bournemouth, Preston and Luton.
Oldham Star Man: Ryan Flynn
A former Liverpool trainee who joined the Latics on a two-year deal in the summer. The 27-year-old midfielder, who is an ex-Scotland Under-19 international, spent five years with Sheffield United, scoring 16 goals in 164 outings. He scored Oldham’s first goal in Tuesday’s EFL Cup win over Wigan.

The Lancashire-born official has refereed two matches this season: Peterborough’s 3-2 opening-day victory at Rochdale and Accrington’s penalty shoot-out success over Bradford in the EFL Cup on Tuesday. Webb officiated one Walsall game last term – our 2-1 victory at Rochdale in August.
