O’CONNOR: CAPTAIN CHAMBERS IS AN INSPIRATION

24 January 2017

Defender full of praise for experienced midfielder...

Captain Adam Chambers has been hailed as an inspiration by teammate James O’Connor.

The experienced midfielder has made 27 appearances for the Saddlers this season and has missed only six of our last 190 league games.

And O’Connor, the Saddlers’ vice-captain, has heaped praise on the 36-year-old for his continued dedication and commitment to improving himself.

“Skip sets his standards, day in day out,” O’Connor commented. “He does absolutely everything he can possibly do to be the best player he can be.

“That’s the most important thing I can say about the captain here. I’m 32 myself and I’m still inspired by my captain coming in and doing that extra half an hour in the gym.

“Nothing ever changes – win, lose or draw, he keeps his standards high and that is massive.”

Chambers skippered the Saddlers to a comfortable 3-1 victory over Bristol Rovers at the weekend – our second successive home win.

The result came a week after the impressive 4-1 triumph over League One leaders Sheffield United, and O’Connor was pleased to follow that up with another strong performance.

“It was pleasing that we managed to build on last week and I thought we were solid throughout,” O’Connor added. “We played some decent stuff at times and it was great to get the win.

“It was probably a typical League One game for the first 40 minutes - a bit cagey with both teams trying to suss each other out.

“When the game is like that, it’s important you stay solid, do the basics well and stay organised. The game normally turns at a certain point and the first goal really spurred us on.

“We didn’t rest on our laurels in the second half and tried not to drop too deep, and keep playing our football.

“We were a threat throughout, and even when they were getting at us and putting us under pressure, we always had an out ball and looked dangerous.”
