Neil Woods says the 1-0 score line over Wrexham didn’t reflect the performance put in by his young Saddlers.The youth team defeated the Welsh side on Saturday thanks to a Cameron Peters finish but the result perhaps flattered Wrexham.
“I thought our energy, the football we tried to play and our competiveness was very good,” said Woods.
“We have an ethic of playing football. We had a lot of possession and because of that Wrexham played very deep which at any level of football is difficult to break down.
“We did break them down but we just didn’t finish them off. We created, we got in behind and I thought in the second half Cameron Peters was fantastic.
“If there’s a slight disappointment which the lads have spoken about is the score line probably doesn’t reflect the control we had in the game.
“I don’t think there is anyone here, even the most devout Wrexham fan, can’t say the victory wasn’t warranted because it was.”
Following on from Walsall’s opening day victory over last season’s champions Wigan, Woods gave his thoughts for the rest of the season.
“We don’t set aims but we want to win every game and everybody at this football club does,” Woods explained.
“We know the standards we are trying to get to and their application at the moment is very pleasing.
“Our main aim is about the player’s progression. Callum Cockerill-Mollett got offered a pro contract this week so that is a success.
“We’ve spoke to the lads about that and we want them to use it as motivation because that means the management is looking at the squad.
“Our goals are to get better all the time and if that takes us into cups and challenging for leagues then we hope it does.
“But the ultimate goal of the season is to get as many of these lads signing professional contracts and one day playing in the first team.
