THE SADDLERS stepped out for the first time at New York Stadium as we locked horns with Rotherham United.

There was an early appeal for a home penalty waved away as Wes Thomas went down under James Chambers' challenge. The home side looking to make a bright start in order to continue their impressive form.

After a free-kick out wide following a foul on Romaine Sawyers was claimed by the 'keeper, The Saddlers launched another raid which saw Sawyers thread through Milan Lalkovic who finished with aplomb to give Walsall a 19th minute lead.

The home faithful are showing their displeasure at some of the decisions by the referee.

Space opened up for a strike for Andy Taylor, which was saved by the 'keeper before Rotherham blazed over at the other end after Ben Pringle's strike was blocked by Ben Purkiss.

A low ball in from the home left was well defended by James Chambers as The Saddlers continued to work hard.

There was some rough treatment for Febian Brandy in the opening period as he won a number of free-kicks.

As the half came to a close, Richard O'Donnell was alert to clear a back-pass from Andy Taylor as Alex Revell lurked with intent.

The first action of the half saw Ben Purkiss booked for preventing the home side taking a throw-in. Then as the ball pumped into the area, Kari Arnason headed over.

The home side looking lively in the opening exchanges of the second period, but The Saddlers restricting them to long range efforts.

A break by Sawyers ends with him dragging a low effort just wide from the right side of the area.

There were a couple of threatening moments as firstly Haris Vuckic saw his effort blocked well at the far post and then Frecklington fired wide from the resulting corner. Walsall defending resolutely.

Some good defending by James Chambers and then Ben Purkiss frustrated Alex Revell.

With just under 20 minutes to go a great ball over the top from Westcarr played in Sawyers who saw his effort blocked by the 'keeper who did well.

The next action saw Ben Purkiss receive his second yellow card for a foul on Ben Pringle and the resulting free-kick was well saved by O'Donnell as The Saddlers forced to play with ten men.

There was a change as Milan Lalkovic was replaced by Paul Downing on 77 minutes.

Downing straight into the action as he blocks well before O'Donnell claims the resulting corner but is victim of a robust challenge in doing so.

A long throw-in caused problems as a looping header from the home side landed just wide of the mark.

There was a late change as Westcarr was replaced by Michael Ngoo.

The home side snatched an equaliser with a powerful strike from Nicky Adams to make it 1-1 in the 89th minute.

In stoppage time, O'Donnell got down well to gather a low strike to his left.
